SCYCLES GHANA
Centre for Sustainable Cycles (SCYCLES Ghana) is a fully register Ghanaian based Environmental NGO dedicated to promoting the sustainability of resources. SCYCLES Ghana was incorporated and registered under the laws of Ghana in 2018 and started operation in the same year. SCYCLES Ghana works within the broad framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals with special focus on the GOAL 12 (Responsible Consumption and production). The organization believes and support the concept of scarce and finite global resources (in particular natural resources). It therefore behooves on producers and consumers alike to ensure these resources are produced and consumed in manner that promotes circular economy.
The organization works with both local and international partners to bring issues of hazardous, toxic chemicals and waste into sharp focus and advocate same within the public policy space.
Over the past few years of its existence, SCYCLES working with its partners have undertaken some ground breaking studies and projects. For instance, with the graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences of University of Ghana, the organization supported a master thesis on the health and safety concerns of waste pickers in some municipal waste dumpsites in Ghana. Currently SCYCLES is collaborating with the same University to undertake a ground breaking studies (at Advanced Stage) on the toxic chemicals in children’s playing toys on the Ghana market. The initial results from this study is proving revealing as it is interesting.
Furthermore, working with Oeko Institute, UNEP, Mountain Research Institute and Ministry of Environment Science Technology and Innovation, SCYCLES is undertaking pilot incentivized collection of waste fishing nets from some fishing communities and channel same into sound recycling. SCYCLES has strong expertise in waste management, hazardous chemicals management, environmental chemistry and toxicology, environmental policy and advocacy.
